This is the end, beautiful friend

A scenery reminiscent of the ‘life in the future’ dioramas. There’s the two of us. With the past’s traces and the future’s predictions, we construct individual living spaces; islands of words, objects, and images.

We’re at the bottom of an abyssal pool, our legs still collide when we swim. We keep our eyes open even though they burn. Our lives are much like this. At this depth, our personal stories and fictions integrate.

We’re here and we draw our own vanitas tableaux. We are like skulls surrounded with objects in this still-life depicting mortality. There is only one thing: We know it all starts and ends here. This is both Hell and Heaven. It starts here, ends here and then starts again here, until everything ends and starts again…

This is the end, beautiful friend is a 35 min physical performance that takes place in a spatial installation by Melis Tezkan and Okan Urun. Inspired by The Doors song The End, the installation/performance focuses on two bodies accompanying one another emotionally and physically in a rhythm created by light and sound and unites them around the act of breath holding.

"This is the end,
Beautiful friend
This is the end,
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes, again
Can you picture what will be, so limitless and free
Desperately in need, of some, stranger's hand
In a, desperate land

 ..."
